Mindfulness has evolved over the past few decades from a popular buzzword to a rigorously researched and proven mental health treatment. Rooted in centuries-old traditions of meditation, mindfulness is simply the process of giving complete attention to the current moment without judgment. Mindfulness also contributes to mental health by increasing and strengthening self-awareness, as well as cultivating compassion both personally and interpersonally. Mindfulness helps individuals to witness their thoughts rather than getting caught up in them. This is life-changing for those who have difficulties with self-criticism, intrusive thoughts, or emotional dysregulation. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) are therapies for chronic depression and trauma-based disorders. Mindfulness holds the individual steady within the present moment, providing the person with the resources to break free from chains of rumination and greet life with greater openness and equanimity.
