Beyond The Blues

The last project I chose to do for this independent study is a ceramic journal that represents the entire process, rather than focusing on a particular theme in mental health. Through my project, I have created several ceramic works that explore themes of growth, resilience, mindfulness, and self-awareness. These ceramics are all associated with different aspects of mental health. Still, now, with a ceramic journal, everything is brought together into one place because journaling is an everyday activity for me. It is representative of reflection and understanding of mental health.

In my journal entries, I record short phrases or reminders for the day rather than writing long narratives. For example, rather than recapping the events of a day, I choose to journal in the morning, writing positive affirmations to keep in mind as the day progresses. Some of these positive reminders can simply be “seek joy,” “avoid stress,” or “practice gratitude.” Although this habit may seem straightforward and lacking in individuality, I have found it to be what works best for me. The purpose of a journal is not to record completed thoughts but incomplete ones. Also, mental health is not about reaching the destination, but about the journey itself.

Keeping a journal is an essential component of mental health because it provides a means of expressing emotions and thoughts without judgment. Putting pen to paper is a way to process experiences and identify patterns, as well as to give the mind a pause. For me, journaling is a grounding practice, like working with clay. Ultimately, this project has taught me that mental health and wellness are supported through consistent reflection and creative expression. This journal represents this commitment to personal growth and self-expression. It is not merely a representation of struggle or feeling, but also the importance of showing up and allowing growth to occur through consistent reflection, and the power of sustained growth over time.
